Can I Get Water?

Confessions of a Fitness Professional

Behind the smile and motivational cues, lies a trainer who is fed up with your you-know-what.

Chapter Three: Can I Get Water?

Day One

(10 minutes into the class).

Client: Can I get water?

Me: Sure.

(Client walks to water fountain. No one else stops for water. I continue with class).

Day Two

(Ten minutes into the class).

Client: Can I get water?

Me: Sure.

(Client waits this time. No one stops for water. I continue with class).

Day Three

(Thirty minutes into the class).

Me: Okay, let’s take a quick water break –

Client: Finally!

Me: You can get water at any time you want.

Client: I know, but I feel bad.

Day Four

Client: Can we get a water break?

Don’t be that guy.

I cannot stop the class at each person’s request. A momentum needs to be maintained to keep the heart rate up and to get through all of the exercises in the workout. I will only call a water break when I feel that the majority of the class needs it. If you, personally, feel dehydrated, don’t worry about whether the rest of the class wants water or not. You may stop to drink water at any time.
