Resolution Resuscitation

Every year, when January 1st comes around, we make resolutions for ourselves. Very few of us stick to them, while most of us tend to fall off track. As we slip into the final weeks of January, you might want to take a moment to ask yourself how far you’ve gotten with your resolution?

Last week, I collected SMART goals with a fellow FIU trainer at our campus’ Resolution Resuscitation. We offered complimentary fitness assessments and asked students to write down a wellness-related goal for the new year, in hopes of restoring some [all too soon] forgotten about resolutions! Rather than letting the students simply write, “Lose 10 pounds”, we implemented the SMART:

S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Attainable
R – Realistic
T – Time-Based

With these important points in mind, students, instead, wrote, “Develop a consistent routine of going to the gym 3-4xs a week to lose 10 pounds by the end of semester.” Applying this tactic to goal setting can make all the difference between failing and succeeding!

What is your SMART goal?
